Mindful Spaces

About this program

The BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) Centre for Mindfulness aspires to transform the hospital’s culture and environment to be more healing, community oriented and compassionate.

One way we hope to do this is by making mindfulness more accessible for all staff, parents/caregivers and children and youth when they experience and engage with physical and digital spaces at BCCH.

WHY mindful spaces? We hope to:

  • Make mindfulness feel more inviting for  children and youth, parents and caregivers, health professionals, and visitors.
  • Make the practice of mindfulness easier to remember.
  • Make BCCH Hospital Campus more welcoming and comfortable.

HOW we are cultivating mindful spaces:

  • Co-developing spaces with families, youth, and the Centre for Mindfulness Council.
  • Partnering and collaborating with colleagues and leaders on the hospital campus.
  • Drawing inspiration from the long history of mindful art, design, and poetry from cultures and traditions in Asia, First Nations in Canada, and more.

WHAT we are doing to cultivate mindful spaces:

  • Designing art and poetry that invites mindful reflection and practice, and placing them at selected locations on our hospital campus
  • In some cases, this work involves subtle enhancements to spaces that are already naturally mindful and beautiful. In other cases, the work involves complete redesign and transformation of a space.
  • Distributing mindfulness artwork throughout the campus.
  • Developing webpages that provide invitations to experience mindfulness at each site, which are accessible via QR codes.
