Workplace Wellness
Theresa Newlove, Director of Workplace Wellness, Culture and Experience

An integral aspect of professionalism is ability to reflect what you need, in the context of ‘in the moment’ or as part of the bigger picture of work-life integration, to remain healthy and engaged in the workplace.  As direct and support care providers, we have unique needs with diverse strategies to care for ourselves.  At BC Children's and BC Women's Hospital we are privileged to have the Center for Mindfulness, committed to build a mindful and compassionate hospital community.

Sharing the vision of offering workplace opportunities to practice mindfulness, the Medical Staff Wellness Committee and the Office of Workplace Wellness, Culture and Experience collaborated with Dr. Jana Davidson and the Mental Health team to engage the Medical Staff with mindful activities in fall of 2019.

Mindful meditation was led by Dr. Fulroop Sidhu, for staff to begin their day in a new way: being present, and with intention. Participants shared that they were able to leave some of the stress experienced before their workday began and bring with them a sense of calm as they moved forward for the rest of their day.

Helen Kennett-Bacon led the mindful eating session at the lunch hour, sharing information about the benefits of mindful eating and guiding participants through a mindful eating experience. After a brief period of awkwardness (eating silently in a group of people!), the group universally expressed that it was a transformative experience - with commitments to take a few minutes in their workdays to literally and figuratively savour a meal.

Mindful Movement was hosted by Dr. Gilbert Lam who shared a number of ways in which, as part of a busy work day, we can engage in mindful movement. No need to take extra time in the day, instead be mindful of each step and our breath as we move from one activity to another during the day.  He led a mindful walk through the hospital grounds allowing an opportunity for the group to be fully immersed in the experience of mindful movement and the surrounding nature.

Workplace wellness looks different for each of us, it is a commitment to ourselves as well as the patients and families we serve.  If you have only a moment in the day – consider a mindful moment.  With gratitude for your compassionate commitment to care.
