Strengthening a Mindful Community at BC Children's Hospital Oak Street Campus
Joanna McDermid MD, Associate Director, Centre for Mindfulness

I attended another mindfulness retreat at Chapin Mill in New York State this past December. The experience was refreshing and enriching and an opportunity to continue to build community.

The new year brings with it an opportunity to reflect and to look forward, a natural starting place for forging new milestones, as individuals and as a collective. It can be a time to renew intentions and to consider impact.

With funding through the Medical Association Staff Engagement Society (MASES) Facilities Engagement fund,  we are excited to offer an opportunity for members of our BC Children’s & Women’s Hospital Medical Staff, together with members of the Health Authority operational and executive leadership, to team up in our experiential workshop, “Mindful Healing and Leadership. We have previously offered our “Mindful Healing” course to members of our medical staff - a program which has been adapted from the Mindful Practice® program for health professionals through the University of Rochester and which is a program related to quality of care, quality of caring and clinician well-being.

The start of the new year is a key time to reconnect with our Mindful Healing alumni and also an opportunity to bolster engagement and connection through workshops which look at mindfulness as a tool to strengthen partnerships, mindful communication and mindful leadership.

Each session will be led by Dr. Dzung Vo and myself and will cover all topics. The sessions will be small groups and highly experiential and interactive. The same session will be offered three times from January to March, 2020. As mindfulness is a developmental and iterative process of growth and self-discovery, participants are welcomed to attend one, two, or all three of the sessions.

For more information and to register visit the learning hub:

  • Session one: January 28, 2020 5:15pm-7:00pm
  • Session two: February 27, 2020 5:15pm-7:00pm
  • Session three: March 9, 2020 5:15pm-7:00pm
